How to Make a Gentle Healing Salve

How to Make a Gentle Healing Salve

Remember when I made my plantain infused oil (and dandelion infused oil, calendula infused oil, and comfrey infused oil) in the spring, and I promised to come back in fall/winter with some awesome DIY projects for you to make with your new oils? Well, I did not forget that promise.  Partly because I’m looking at these beautiful jars of super amazing infused oils and I just HAVE to use them in somehow. 😉 The problem was that I didn’t know which type of DIY project to make first. Talk about being overwhelmed. Do I make a beauty cream? Some homemade lotion? A neosporin-type all purpose salve? Ahh…I want to make them all, but there is so little free time these days.  Fortunately, my beautiful cousin (and friend!) is pregnant and due to have her baby any minute now. I am determined to put together a lovely basket of healthy supplies (both homemade and bought) to help her out during those first weeks of new baby-hood. These are supplies to...

How to Make Dandelion Infused Oil

How to Make Dandelion Infused Oil

Every winter is happens: I finally have time to make salves, ointments, teas, tinctures, etc. and the recipes all require infused oils that use plants that are only fresh and free in my yard in the spring and summer. As an ambitious gardener, I barely keep my sanity during the spring and summer with my garden plans. I do NOT have time to make herbal remedies then! So I’ve some up with a compromise: I’m spending ONE day making Dandelion Infused Oil, Comfrey Infused Oil, and Plantain Infused Oil. When my Calendula blooms later this summer, I’ll then spend ONE day making Calendula Infused Oil and Yarrow Infused Oil. Since infused oils stay good for at least a year, I will be able to use them this winter for my projects. Huzzah! How to Make Dandelion Infused Oil It’s probably a safe assumption to say that almost all of us have dandelions in our yard. If you don’t you can get seeds here.  This is one of the most common “weeds” around. Sadly,...

How to Make Comfrey Infused Oil

How to Make Comfrey Infused Oil

As a gardener, I’m pretty busy in spring, summer, and fall. Every winter, however, I FINALLY have time to make herbal remedies to prepare for the coming year. This includes salves, herbal teas, tinctures, etc. Especially salves. They last for at least a year, so I can make them when I have time in the winter, and then use them when I need them for the rest of the year. Here’s the problem: The recipes all call for infused oils with plants that are only available in my yard/garden during the spring and summer. Boo!  So, this spring, I made the time to gather plants for all of the following infused oils: Plantain Infused Oil, Comfrey Infused Oil, and Dandelion Infused Oil. I am going to make all three of these infused oils on the SAME DAY. That way, I can get three chores done at the same time, and I will still have time to do all of my gardening chores. Booyah. (NOTE: This summer, I’ll make Calendula Infused Oil...

How to Make a Headache Salve

How to Make a Headache Salve

How to Make a Headache Salve I’ve mentioned it before (in my ‘about me‘ info, for example) that I’m one of those people who is prone to headaches. When the weather changes, when I eat too much processed foods, for my hormonal cycles, when I’m dehydrated, when it’s allergy season, when it’s too sunny, when my eyes are strained, when I’m stressed….yep, I get headaches for pretty much everything. It used to be pretty bad. In fact, I would have more days in a month WITH headaches than without.  However, as I wrote in my ‘15 Herbs for Headaches‘ post, I’ve found some amazing natural solutions that have made it so that I have very few serious headaches anymore. It’s not just herbal remedies, but it’s also things like eating Real Food, living a more stress-free lifestyle, and exercising. I also keep my natural medicine cabinet stocked with Feverfew tincture for any bad headaches or migraines. When I DO get a headache, I prefer to use every possible natural remedy/option possible ASAP. I...

DIY Sore Muscle Salve

DIY Sore Muscle Salve

DIY Sore Muscle Salve I’ve been meaning to make my own DIY salve for sore muscles for quite some time. However, life gets busy and whatnot, so I kept putting it off. It’s one of those things where you KNOW you will need it someday, but since it’s not an immediate need, the chore keeps getting put off over and over again. Very recently, a friend of mine needed something for sore muscles. Suddenly, I knew I had a reason to finally make a double batch of sore muscle salve. Huzzah! This Sore Muscle Salve contains both warming and cooling medicinal products, so it will feel kinda like ‘icy hot’ products. My particular salve contains only a few of the herbs and essential oils that are helpful for sore muscles, pain, and/or inflammation. Someday, hopefully I will make up a nice list for you of the natural remedies for sore muscles. For now, this recipe will have to do! This recipe DOES take a bit more time than a...
